How Far Apart to Plant Fruit Trees in Florida (Why I Plant Mangos 10 Feet Apart)

Somebody told you to plant your mango tree 20 feet away from everything else. They probably never tested it. They read it, repeated it, and now you are about to waste your whole backyard on four trees.
I grow food in West Central Florida, zone 10a. I have been doing it here for eleven years. Most of my fruit trees sit 10 to 15 feet apart, some closer than that, and they are healthier than the lonely mango trees I see planted out in the middle of open yards like a flagpole with leaves.
This post makes the case for planting closer. It is not a hunch. University of Florida IFAS Extension already says you can do it, and almost nobody quotes that part.
The short answer
How far apart should you plant fruit trees in a Florida backyard? If you commit to pruning every year, 10 to 15 feet apart is enough for mango, avocado, citrus, and most subtropical fruit trees. UF/IFAS states that mango varieties "where tree training and annual pruning will be practiced to limit tree size may be planted 12 to 15 feet (3.7 to 4.6 m) apart from other trees, buildings, and power lines." The 20 to 30 foot rule you keep hearing is written for unpruned trees and commercial groves, not for a pruned backyard food forest. Pruning is the price of admission. Skip it and close spacing will fail you.
Where the 20 foot rule actually comes from
Read the UF/IFAS mango publication all the way through and you find two different recommendations sitting right next to each other.
The first one is the one everybody quotes: "Vigorous mango varieties and mango trees where no pruning is likely to be practiced should be planted 25 to 30 feet or more (7.6 to 9.1 m) away from buildings, power lines, or other trees."
Read that sentence slowly. Where no pruning is likely to be practiced. That rule was written for the homeowner who is going to plant a tree and walk away from it. Left alone, UF/IFAS notes, many mango varieties become "medium to large (30 to 100 ft) trees." Of course that needs 30 feet. It is going to become a building.
The second recommendation is in the same publication, and it is the one that matters to anybody serious about growing food: trees "where tree training and annual pruning will be practiced to limit tree size may be planted 12 to 15 feet apart from other trees, buildings, and power lines."
That is the university, in writing, telling you that spacing is a function of pruning. Not a fixed number. A choice you make. UF/IFAS goes further in its storm preparation guide, where the recommended maintained height for a home landscape mango is "6 to 15 ft high, with judicious but regular pruning."
A 10 foot mango tree is not a stunted tree. It is a normal, university recommended home landscape mango tree.
Most of the people repeating the 20 foot number online have never pruned a mango in their life. They are copying a line out of context, and that line is quietly costing Florida backyard growers ten years of harvests.
Farms space trees far apart for a reason that has nothing to do with you
Here is the part nobody explains. Commercial groves are not designed to feed a family. They are designed to move fruit onto a truck.
Florida's commercial mango industry runs roughly 2,000 acres and about 200,000 trees, which works out to about 100 trees per acre. Groves plant 10 to 30 feet apart within rows and 25 to 30 feet between rows. That wide between row number is not about tree health. It is aisle space. It exists so a tractor, a sprayer, a mechanical hedger, and a picking crew can drive through without tearing up the canopy. Growers also mechanically cut those trees back two to four times per season and hold them near 20 feet tall, again for spray coverage and harvest access.
Every one of those decisions is a business decision about yield per acre and labor cost per pound. None of them is a decision about what makes one tree happy in a quarter acre yard.
You do not own a tractor. You are not selling fruit by the bushel. Copying a grove layout into a backyard is like buying a semi truck to pick up groceries.
You do not need 300 pounds of mangos off one tree
Do the math on what that grove tree actually produces. UF/IFAS puts average yields from a mature Florida mango tree at 4 to 6 bushels, or 220 to 330 pounds per tree.
Sit with that. Three hundred pounds of mangos. Off one tree. In about a six week window.
Your family cannot eat it. Your neighbors will stop answering the door. You will be hauling five gallon buckets of fruit to the curb and calling it a good year. That number is only useful if somebody is buying the fruit from you.
Now flip it. A pruned 10 foot mango tree in my yard gives us somewhere around 50 to 100 mangos a season. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden reports similar behavior on compact varieties, noting that a Cogshall "can be maintained at a height and spread of six feet or less" and that "a tree will easily produce 30 to 40 pounds of fruit while retaining health and vigor."
Say you have six of those instead of one giant. Six trees at 50 to 100 fruit each is 300 to 600 mangos a year, spread across six different varieties, ripening at six different times. Fairchild puts it plainly: "by choosing the right varieties you can extend the mango season from May to September."
One big tree gives you a wall of identical fruit for three weeks. Six small trees give you mangos most of the summer. Same yard. Same water. Same you.
Benefit 1: close trees protect each other from Central Florida cold
This is the one that convinced me, and it is the one that Central Florida growers get wrong the most.
We are not South Florida. UF/IFAS notes that tropical fruit production in this state was historically confined to the southeastern and southwestern coastal areas, because water moderates temperature and the interior does not have that buffer. Every mile you sit away from the coast, your winter lows get a little less forgiving. A grower on the southeast coast and a grower in the middle of the state are not playing the same game, no matter what the hardiness map says.
And mangos have a narrow floor. UF/IFAS lists freeze damage for mango starting in the 25 to 28 degree range. Young trees can be killed at 29 to 30 degrees. Mature trees can take about 25 degrees for a few hours with injury to leaves and small branches. Flowers and small fruit take damage below 40 degrees, which is why a mild Central Florida cold snap in February can wipe out a crop without killing a single tree.
Here is where spacing enters the picture. UF/IFAS cold protection guidance explains that tree canopies "trap heat radiating from the ground to the atmosphere, and thereby elevate the air temperature beneath them." That is the mechanism. Canopy holds ground heat in on a still, clear, radiational freeze night. It is the same reason frost forms on your open lawn and skips the ground under the oak tree.
The same guidance lists "adjacent plantings" alongside fences and buildings as effective windbreaks, and notes that windbreaks help reduce damage from short lived advective freezes and the winds that come with them. A grouped block of trees is a windbreak. A single tree standing alone in the open is a wind target.
There is a third piece most people never think about. UF/IFAS observes that "shading from early morning sun may decrease bark splitting of some woody plants after a freeze." Frozen tissue that thaws fast in direct morning sun splits. Trees that shade each other thaw slower and split less.
Put those together and the picture is obvious. A tight block of fruit trees builds its own warmer, calmer, shaded pocket. An isolated tree on a bare island gets the full wind, the full radiational heat loss, and the full morning sun on frozen bark.
I learned this the hard way. In January 2026 we ran multiple days under 30 degrees with sustained wind strong enough that fire protection was useless. I lost every banana plant on the property, the first total banana loss in six years here. The trees that came through it best were the ones tucked into the interior of a dense planting. The exposed ones took the beating.
Benefit 2: more trees means more variety, and variety is the actual goal
Run the layout math on a 30 by 30 foot corner of your yard.
- At 20 foot spacing: you fit 4 trees.
- At 10 foot spacing: you fit 16 trees.
Four times the trees in the identical square of dirt. That is not a small edge. That is the difference between a yard with a mango tree and a yard with a food forest.
And it is not just quantity. It is insurance. Fairchild's guidance to home growers is to "plant as many varieties as you have space for," and the reason is that varieties do not all fail together. Different mangos flower at different times, carry different disease resistance, and handle a bad spring differently. When you own one tree, a single badly timed cold snap or a wet, anthracnose heavy bloom season takes your entire crop. When you own eight, something always makes it.
Monoculture is fragile whether it is a thousand acres or one backyard.
Benefit 3: grouped trees handle wind, sun, and storms better
Florida hands out three kinds of punishment: cold, sun, and wind. Density helps with all three.
Wind and storms. UF/IFAS is direct about this one: "The most effective cultural practice to reduce the potential for tree toppling and major damage is managing tree height and spread." Short trees survive hurricanes. Tall trees become sails. Close planting forces you to keep trees short, which is the exact thing that saves them in September. A grouped stand also breaks wind for its neighbors instead of taking the whole hit alone.
Sun. UF/IFAS warns that "overheating of sun exposed tree trunks and limbs (commonly called sunburn) is potentially a severe problem," and their fix after storm damage is to shade the exposed trunk and scaffold limbs. In a dense planting, the trees do that shading for each other year round. Out on an island, the west side of that trunk cooks every afternoon from May through September. UF/IFAS lists heat damage for mango starting above 104 degrees, and a bare trunk in direct Florida sun runs far hotter than the air around it.
Soil. Closer canopies shade the ground between trees. Shaded ground stays cooler, holds moisture longer, and grows fewer weeds. That is less irrigation and less work for you.
The one rule: you have to prune. Every year. No exceptions.
This is the entire deal. Close spacing is not a shortcut. It is a trade. You trade annual pruning for four times the trees.
If you will not prune, plant at 25 to 30 feet like the university says and do not argue with it. A 10 foot spacing with no pruning is not a food forest. It is a thicket that will shade itself into a fruitless mess in about five years.
UF/IFAS says home landscape fruit trees "should be pruned annually or biannually beginning soon after planting to develop a strong tree structure and later to remove dead wood." Start early. Do not wait until the tree is 18 feet tall and you need a ladder and a prayer.
What that looks like in practice:
- Set the height early. Decide your ceiling the year you plant. Mine is roughly 10 feet, because that is what I can pick, spray, and cover from the ground.
- Prune right after harvest. For mango that means summer, once the fruit is off. Pruning then still leaves the tree time to push the new growth that carries next year's flowers.
- Never take too much at once. UF/IFAS Extension in Miami-Dade puts the cap plainly: never remove more than 30 percent of a tree's leaf area at one time, or the tree responds by throwing vegetative growth instead of fruit.
- Open the middle. Take a few upper limbs back to their origin each year. UF/IFAS notes this "will help prevent the loss of the lower tree canopy, reduce the work and time to spray and harvest the fruit and greatly reduce possible storm damage." Light and air need a path through the tree.
- Prune where the trees meet. Wherever two canopies touch, cut. That seam is the whole job in a dense planting.
Two afternoons a year. That is the cost.
The honest counterargument, and why it does not change my answer
I am not going to pretend the other side has nothing. UF/IFAS Extension in Miami-Dade published a spacing article that says to "give your trees the space it will need, not the space it needs now," and warns that "planting fruit trees too close together when they are young will spell disaster later down the line." Their line is the one that sticks with me: "A shaded mango tree is just a tree. It won't give you fruit if it is getting crowded out."
They are right. That is exactly what happens to people who plant close and never touch a saw. Shade kills fruiting. A mango that does not get sun does not set a crop, and no amount of good intention fixes it.
Notice, though, what that same article concedes in the next breath: "You can keep most fruit trees 15 feet tall by 15 feet wide if you prune annually."
So even the strongest argument against close planting is really an argument against neglect. The disagreement is not about spacing. It is about whether the average homeowner will actually maintain the trees. Extension has to write for the person who will not. I am writing for the person who will.
If that is not you, be honest with yourself today and plant far apart. There is no shame in it. But do not tell the grower who prunes every summer that his 10 foot spacing is wrong, when the university's own publication gives him 12 to 15 feet and his trees are loaded.
How I space my own food forest
Here is what I actually run in the ground, not theory:
- Mango: 10 to 15 feet, held around 10 feet tall. Multiple varieties so the season stretches instead of stacking.
- Avocado: 12 to 15 feet, pruned hard, because avocado will run away from you faster than mango will.
- Citrus: 8 to 12 feet. Citrus takes tight spacing better than almost anything in a Florida yard.
- Banana, papaya, moringa, pigeon pea: tucked into the gaps at 4 to 6 feet. These are the fast fillers that make the block dense while the fruit trees are still young.
- Under everything: longevity spinach, katuk, lemongrass, sweet potato. Bare soil in Florida is wasted soil.
The result is a block that shades its own ground, breaks its own wind, holds its own heat on a cold night, and hands us something to pick nearly every month of the year.

The 20 foot rule is not wrong. It is just written for somebody else. It is written for the person who plants a tree and never comes back with a saw.
If you are willing to prune two afternoons a year, you can put four times the trees in the same yard, grow four times the varieties, harvest across the whole summer instead of three weeks, and give every one of those trees a warmer, calmer, better protected place to stand through a Central Florida winter.
Do not plant your fruit tree on an island. Give it neighbors.
