Moringa – The Plant That Feeds My Family and Reminds Me What Really Matters

If you've been following GrowFitFL, you've heard me talk about moringa before. Maybe you've seen the term "miracle tree" thrown around. It sounds dramatic but believe me, this one plant comes close to earning the title. Moringa is growth on steroids nutrients, resilience, flavor. That link you just clicked? That's my full video walking you through exactly how I grow, use, and rely on this tree.

I've got a handful of moringa trees in my backyard now. When storms come through, they bounce back. When life gets busy or stress creeps in, I walk past them, touch their leaves, and take a breath. The leaves, flowers, pods, even seeds every part of the tree gives something powerful. The leaves are packed with protein, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, antioxidants all that in a handful of greenery from your backyard. Not store-bought, not processed, but fresh and living.

Growing moringa in Florida is as simple as it gets. You can start with seeds or cuttings. I usually go seed, because it's easy, and I love that plants I grow myself take root not only in soil but in intention. Once it takes off, you want to prune it hard. If you don't, it'll shoot up tall and skinny, and you'll struggle to reach the leaves. I've learned to cut it low and often. Every time I prune, I either eat the leaves or stick cuttings in the ground. Most take root and become new trees in weeks. That's how I built my moringa grove without spending a fortune.

If you want a complete guide to building a yard full of productive plants like moringa, my book Grow Food NOT Lawns covers how to design and plant a year-round edible landscape in Florida. It is the same approach I use in my own backyard.

Harvesting? Easy. Pluck the fresh leaves and toss them into a salad, soup, or smoothie. If I've got a bunch, I dry them. That powder is pure gold. I'll mix it into water, juice, or sprinkling it over food. My kids don't fight over it. I sneak it in muffins, smoothies, whatever I can think of, and they're riding that health wave with me without knowing it.

Ready to take your edible yard further? The Florida Food Forest Masterclass shows you how to layer trees, shrubs, and ground covers like moringa into a thriving food forest that feeds your family year-round.

This tree is about more than health. It's about legacy. It wasn't long after I lost my dad that I started working with plants seriously. I kept thinking about how much better things might have been if I'd known then what I know now. I can't fix the past, but I can teach my kids. And my viewers. I can show up with living proof that caring for your body doesn't need pharmaceutical labels or a billion-dollar supplement bottle. It can be a tree in your yard.

If you're ready to grow your own moringa tree, start with this video. Watch it. Learn from it. Then plant something. Do something. Real health from real roots.
