Hibiscus Tea and Blood Pressure: I Grow 80 Sorrel Plants

The internet decided this week that hibiscus tea beats matcha. I went and read the actual research before I repeated it. The truth is smaller than the headline, and it is still good enough that I have more than 80 sorrel plants growing behind my house in West Central Florida right now.

Sorrel and hibiscus tea are the same plant. That is the part most people miss. The red tea in the box at the grocery store is Hibiscus sabdariffa, and Hibiscus sabdariffa is what my grandmother's generation called sorrel. It grows here like a weed. It just needs you to plant it on Florida's calendar instead of somebody else's.

So let us go through what researchers actually measured, where the viral version gets sloppy, and how you grow the plant yourself.

One thing first, and I mean it. Nothing below is medical advice. I am a gardener and a former trainer, not your doctor. Do not start, stop, or change any medication because of a blog post.

The short answer

Does hibiscus tea lower blood pressure? In research settings, it has. A 2022 systematic review in Nutrition Reviews pooled 17 controlled trials and reported that Hibiscus sabdariffa lowered systolic blood pressure by about 7.1 points compared to placebo. Diastolic did not move enough to reach statistical significance in that comparison. A 2010 Tufts trial funded through the USDA got a nearly identical result: 65 adults drinking three cups a day for six weeks dropped systolic pressure 7.2 points versus 1.3 in the placebo group. The effects showed up in people who already had high readings, they took weeks not minutes, and reviewers rated the underlying studies as carrying a moderate risk of bias. Hibiscus tea is a good habit with real research behind it. It is not a substitute for medical care.

What the research on hibiscus tea and blood pressure actually says

There are three pieces of evidence worth knowing. I am giving you the numbers and the weak spots, because a number without its weak spot is just marketing.

The Tufts trial, 2010. Published in the Journal of Nutrition out of the Antioxidants Research Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. Sixty-five adults between 30 and 70, all with pre-high or mildly high readings, none of them on blood pressure medication. Half drank three 8-ounce servings of brewed hibiscus tea a day. Half drank a look-alike placebo drink. Six weeks.

Systolic pressure fell 7.2 points in the hibiscus group and 1.3 in the placebo group. Diastolic dropped 3.1 versus 0.5, which was not a statistically meaningful difference. And the people who started highest fell the furthest. In the group whose starting systolic was 129 or above, the drop was 13.2 points.

The 2022 review. Ellis and colleagues, published in Nutrition Reviews. They gathered 17 controlled trials, 415 people on hibiscus and 404 on control. Doses ran from tiny extract capsules all the way up to 9 grams a day. Duration ran 15 to 90 days.

  • Systolic versus placebo: down about 7.1 points, and that one held up statistically.
  • Diastolic versus placebo: down about 5.6 points, but the confidence range crossed zero, so it did not hold up.
  • Versus actual blood pressure medication: no meaningful difference either way.
  • The honest caveat: the studies disagreed with each other a lot, and the reviewers flagged moderate risk of bias, especially around blinding.

The bigger pool. A separate 2022 review in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology pooled 13 trials and 1,205 people. It landed at 6.67 points systolic and 4.35 diastolic below placebo. And a 2025 umbrella review in Complementary Therapies in Medicine covering 26 trials and 1,797 people found the effect was dose dependent, strongest in people over 50 and in trials running longer than four weeks, and still no better than a prescription.

Three different research teams, three different piles of studies, same neighborhood of numbers. That is about as consistent as nutrition research gets.

The part nobody puts in the caption

One cup does nothing.

In 2025 the same lead researcher ran an acute study. Twenty adults, single serving, blood pressure checked over the next two hours. No change at all. It did lower post-meal blood sugar and it did improve word recall, but blood pressure did not move.

So this is not a drink-it-and-feel-it thing. Every trial that saw a blood pressure effect ran for weeks of daily drinking. That is a habit, not a hack. Which, if you have been around here a while, is the same thing I say about everything.

Where the hibiscus beats matcha claim falls apart

Here is where I have to disagree with the internet, and I would rather lose the share than repeat something I cannot back up.

The viral claim goes like this: hibiscus tea topped a comparison of 283 popular drinks, beating green tea and matcha. The study behind it is real. It is Carlsen and colleagues, published in Nutrition Journal in 2010, and it measured the antioxidant content of more than 3,100 foods and drinks using a lab test called FRAP. The beverage category really did contain 283 products.

I pulled the table. Here is what it says.

  • Prepared hibiscus tea scored 6.99.
  • Prepared green teas scored 0.88 to 2.45.
  • Prepared black teas scored 0.75 to 1.21.
  • Chamomile scored 0.10.

So hibiscus did beat every brewed tea in that table, and it was not close. That part is true and I will say it on camera.

But it was not the top drink. A double espresso scored 16.33, more than twice the hibiscus number. And matcha is the problem case, because you drink matcha as the whole powdered leaf, not as a steeped-and-strained brew. Green tea powder in that same table scored in the hundreds. Comparing a brewed cup to a powdered leaf is comparing two different things and calling it a race.

The article that kicked all this off actually handled it correctly. It quoted a dietitian saying the two contain different families of antioxidants, matcha carrying concentrated catechins and hibiscus carrying anthocyanins and polyphenolic acids, and that no strong research directly compares their total antioxidant capacity. Then social media took that and turned it into a winner.

The blood pressure comparison is a different story, and here hibiscus does look stronger. A 2014 review of green tea catechins and blood pressure found systolic down about 2.1 points and diastolic about 1.7. Set that next to hibiscus at about 7 and you can see the gap.

My honest read: drink both if you like both. But if blood pressure is your reason, hibiscus has the better paperwork.

Why researchers think it works

Short version, and I am hedging on purpose because the scientists hedge too.

The deep red color in a sorrel calyx comes from anthocyanins, mainly two named delphinidin-3-sambubioside and cyanidin-3-sambubioside. In test tubes, those two compounds block angiotensin converting enzyme, which is the same target a whole class of blood pressure drugs aims at. Researchers have also proposed a mild diuretic effect and a direct relaxing effect on blood vessel walls.

Read that again though. Test tubes and rats. Nobody has established that a cup of tea does that inside a human body. The 2014 review in Food Chemistry that catalogued all of this said plainly that most of the research used poorly characterized extracts and called for better trials.

The blood pressure effect in people is measured. The reason for it is still a good guess.

Sorrel, roselle, hibiscus, Florida cranberry

Four names, one plant. Hibiscus sabdariffa.

Call it roselle in a nursery, sorrel in a Caribbean kitchen, Florida cranberry in an old extension bulletin, hibiscus in the tea aisle. Same plant every time.

Two things it is not. It is not wood sorrel, that little clover-looking thing in your lawn. It is not French sorrel, the lemony salad green. Those are different plants entirely and neither one has anything to do with this research.

And the part you actually drink is not the flower. It is the calyx, the fleshy red cup that swells up around the seed pod after the flower drops. That is the piece you harvest, dry, and steep.

Why I grow more than 80 sorrel plants

People ask why I plant so many of one thing. Three reasons.

One, the price. Dried hibiscus is not cheap by the pound, and a single well-grown plant can put out around 12 pounds of calyces in a good season. Multiply that by 80 and you understand why I stopped buying tea.

Two, it fits the calendar nobody else uses. Sorrel produces in October and November. That is the exact stretch when a Florida yard is between the summer crops and the winter greens. It is free production in a slow window.

Three, it is honest work for the space. A sorrel plant gets 5 to 7 feet tall and nearly as wide. It is a hedge that makes tea. It handles our heat, it handles our sand, and it asks for almost nothing once it is established.

That is what I mean by food forest medicine. Not a supplement bottle. A plant that grows itself in your yard while you are asleep.

The quick version on growing it

Full guide is on its own page, but here is the shape of it. UF/IFAS says plant roselle in April or May, give it about 4 feet of room, and expect nothing until fall. It is photoperiod sensitive, so it grows all summer and then blooms around October as the days shorten. Harvest the calyces in October and November while they are still tender. It is grown as an annual here because frost ends it.

How we make it

Simple, because it should be.

Pick the calyces, pull the seed pod out of the center, and either use them fresh or dry them until they snap. Steep in hot water until it goes deep red, five to ten minutes. It comes out tart, closer to cranberry than to anything you would call tea. My wife Toni will sweeten hers. I mostly do not.

Iced is better than hot in a Florida August, and that is not a scientific opinion.

Who needs to be careful

This section is here because it belongs here, not because a lawyer made me write it.

Hibiscus has a good safety record overall. A 2026 scoping review in Heliyon pulled together 51 clinical studies, 53 preclinical studies, and 14 papers on herb-drug interactions, and the most common problem reported was mild stomach upset. That same review proposed a reasonable ceiling of about 500 milliliters of tea a day for up to six months at normal brewing strength.

But there are real interaction signals in the literature, and you should know them.

  • Chloroquine. A 1994 human study found hibiscus drunk alongside chloroquine cut the amount of drug reaching the bloodstream sharply. The authors warned the drug could lose effectiveness.
  • Acetaminophen. A small study of six volunteers found hibiscus changed how fast acetaminophen cleared the body.
  • Diclofenac. A human study found hibiscus reduced how much of the drug was excreted.
  • Hydrochlorothiazide. An animal study found hibiscus raised and prolonged drug levels. Animals only, but worth mentioning since a lot of people on that drug are exactly the people reading this.
  • Pregnancy. Researchers flag caution here based on animal reproductive and developmental studies and long traditional use as a menstrual stimulant. I did not find a human trial proving harm. That is still a conversation for your doctor, not a blog.

And the big one. If you are on blood pressure medication, hibiscus is not a swap. The reviews found it performed about the same as medication in trials, which is genuinely impressive, and also exactly the kind of finding that gets people hurt when they read it wrong and quit their prescription. Talk to your doctor before you add it and never subtract anything on your own.

Not fast. A 2025 acute study of 20 adults measured blood pressure over the two hours after a single serving and found no change. Every trial that saw a blood pressure effect involved daily drinking for weeks. Treat it as a habit, not a quick fix.

Is hibiscus tea better than matcha for antioxidants?

Not proven. In the 2010 Nutrition Journal FRAP survey, brewed hibiscus scored 6.99 and brewed green teas scored 0.88 to 2.45, so hibiscus clearly beat brewed green tea. But matcha is consumed as whole powdered leaf, which scored far higher in that same table, and a double espresso scored 16.33. The two drinks also carry different antioxidant families, and no strong study compares their total antioxidant capacity head to head.

Is sorrel the same thing as hibiscus?

The sorrel used for tea is Hibiscus sabdariffa, also called roselle and Florida cranberry. It is the same plant sold as hibiscus tea. It is not the same as wood sorrel, the clover-shaped lawn plant, or French sorrel, the lemony salad green. The part you drink is the calyx, the fleshy red cup that forms after the flower drops.

Can I drink hibiscus tea if I take blood pressure medication?

Ask your doctor first. Research reviews found hibiscus performed about the same as blood pressure medication in trials, and there are documented interaction signals with chloroquine, acetaminophen, diclofenac, and, in animal studies, hydrochlorothiazide. Never stop or reduce a prescription on your own.

The bottom line

A viral post said hibiscus beats matcha. The study it points to does not quite say that, and I am not going to pretend it does just because the plant happens to be growing in my yard.

Here is what the research does support. Drink hibiscus tea daily for a few weeks and, in trial after trial, systolic blood pressure came down around 7 points in people who started high. That is a real number from real researchers, with real limitations attached.

And here is the part that has nothing to do with any study. The tea costs me nothing. It grows itself in sand, in heat, in a month when the rest of the garden is thinking about quitting. I did not have to trust a supply chain, a label, or a bank to get it.

That is the whole idea behind this place. Grow the thing instead of buying the thing.
