How to Propagate Moringa the Right Way

Moringa is one of the fastest, easiest trees to grow if you know a few simple tricks. You can grow it from seed or cutting, and I use both methods depending on the situation. Seeds build stronger roots over time, but cuttings are the quick way to get a tree in the ground and growing fast.

Seeds vs Cuttings

  • Seeds: They take longer to get started, but the root system they develop is stronger and deeper. If you want a long-term, drought-resistant tree, seeds are the best route.
  • Cuttings: If speed is your goal, this is the method. Within weeks you can have new growth sprouting, and before you know it you’re harvesting leaves. The roots aren’t as strong as seed-grown, but the payoff is speed.

My Method for Cuttings

When I use cuttings, I don’t go small. I like to cut pieces that are at least 2 to 4 feet in length. The thicker and longer the cutting, the better the survival rate in my experience.

Once I have the cutting, I usually strip a small section of bark near the bottom to expose the cambium layer. That’s where the growth action happens. After that, I rub fresh aloe on the exposed area. Aloe works as a natural rooting agent and helps the cutting establish faster.

Planting

I always plant cuttings about one-third of the way into the soil. If the cutting is 3 feet, then one foot goes underground. If it’s 4 feet, then I bury around 16 inches. The key is to give it enough stability and soil contact so roots can form while still leaving plenty of the cutting above ground to catch sunlight.

Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Moringa hates sitting in wet soil, so don’t drown it. Within a few weeks you should see leaves pushing out, and in a few months you’ll have a healthy young tree.

Why I Like This Method

This approach works because it is simple, natural, and effective. Aloe is inexpensive and safe, and moringa cuttings are abundant once you have even one mature tree. Between seeds and cuttings, you can fill your yard with moringa faster than most people believe possible.
